Moonstone is enchanting! When one thinks of gemstones, they don’t generally think of them as being innately male or female. They don’t look at an emerald stone and believe, “Wow, that’s a male mineral.” Or upon seeing a lapis lazuli say, “Look at the feminine curves of that rock.It could be mentioned that moonstone is actually the most feminine of all other gemstones. There is no denying that moonstone’s origin, healing properties, and mental abilities are rooted in the female spirit.
For example, Moonstone is soft, both in color and in its ability to be easily scratched—as are most women. Say a harsh word to a woman and she will wear that “scratch” for as long as her memory holds out. Moonstone’s natural colors are white, blues, pinks and yellows. It is said that moonstone alleviates fears, just as a good parent calms the fear of a child frightened by the dark. When the moon is high it thought that the stone enocourages people to fall deeply in love and see their future together. What an amazing stone!
Its name is derived from a visual effect, or sheen, caused by light reflecting internally in the moonstone from layer inclusion of different feldspars. Pliny mentions stones called astrion, astriotes and ceraunia, and these were very probably what we now know as moonstone. He describes the first two as being transparent, like rock crystal, but with a bright white spot that appears to move as the stone is rotated and twisted in the fingers.
