Ever since the first century particular gemstones have been linked with the zodiac signs and have been incorporated into birthstone jewelry. At first birthstone schemes were based on the individual color of the stones. The origins of the practice are believed to be related to the Breastplate of Aaron which incorporated gems representing the 12 tribes of Israel. Each gem had the name of the tribe inscribed on it and they were attached to the breastplate in 4 rows of three. While the names of the gemstones that were used are accepted, the correct translation is undetermined so the particular stones used are not known. This has resulted in different gemstones being associated with the different zodiac signs.

Later birthstones became linked to the months of the year rather than the zodiac signs and there has been a lot of disparity in the month to which a gemstone is assigned. The most extensively used list these days is one which was proposed in 1902 by the American Association of Jewelers, and incorporates some substitutes for the higher-priced gemstones. One gemstone has been added since then. Tanzanite was added as a birthstone for December in 2002 by the American Gem Association although it is not acknowledged by everyone.

Some other listings which correlate specific gemstones with the month of birth include mystical birthstones and Ayurvedic birthstones. The mystical birthstones list is thought to originate over 1000 years in the past and originated Tibet, the Ayurvedic birthstones list is from ancient Indian medicine and dates back to around 1500 BC. However the majority use the modern systems initiated by the Association of Jewelers.

Contemporary Scheme

January – garnet, emerald

February – amethyst

March – aquamarine

April – diamond

May – emerald

June – moonstone, pearl

July – ruby

August – peridot

September – sapphire

October – opal, tourmaline

November – topaz, citrine

December – turquoise, tanzanite, blue topaz

Consequently there are various different gemstones to select from. If you are not fond of your birthstone from the contemporary system, select one from the traditional listing. There are lovely examples of silver birthstone jewelry available and they make superb birthday <a href="http://www.stylebum.com/category/gifts/"target="_self"title="gifts" >gifts for loved ones, that demonstrate we put thought into picking a gift that is perfect for them.
