With the fashion industry generating over 350 billion annually, a few New York based designers ( Diane Von Furstenberg, Narcisco Rodriguez and Nicole Miller just to name a few) have formed a coalition in seeking that the current US copy write law extend to the fashion world. The Council of Fashion Designers of America is pushing for the Design Piracy Prohibition Act. The act would grant a three year copyright protection in fashion designs, and would incur penalties of 250,000 or $5 per copy when violated.

The bill also might go as far as protecting not only the design concepts cut and shape, but also go farther and actually protect the pattern on a piece of fabric used for garment assembly.
Both Houses have agreed and have drafted similar bills recognizing the need for US fashion industry to be protected by law.

What has caused this change of attitude in the fashion world when after all fashion is a re-inventing of itself from past trends to drawing inspiration from other designer’s .In the past the view was that”Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery?”
Why change now?
Three drastic things have turned the American fashion world to take notice and re-think the rather relaxed view of the past.

The new trend of top designers like Marc Jacobs, Vera Wang, Isaac Mizrahi, and Nicole Miller bringing exclusive designer collections to mid level retailers such as Target, Kohl’s and JC Penny’s thus affording the masses the appeal of being fashionable.
The rate at which knock-offs can be created from cut, to production to on the rack from huge over sea’s supply chains and manufacturing.

Finally the new trend of designers extending their own labels into diversified markets crossing over to reach new potential clients. A good example would be some of the luxury jean line designers, now creating sportswear, accessories and even shoes.

However, not all in the fashion industry agree with the proposed bill and even the The Council of Fashion Designers of America is split on the bill. What causes concerns are the damaging effects it could have, the cure maybe greater than the illness stifling creativity, competition and growth. After all it is these very same principles that allow fashion to grow, to be fresh drawing it’s inspiration from the past and being able to be free and reference other’s designs and some how making them original.

How many times have we seen fashion classics re-born such as the little black cocktail dress, the polo shirt or the cargo pants, with a new twist, perhaps; an added pocket, different material or new stitch this is what births trends, the very thing that keeps fashion alive, who will decide who created an original.

Did Ralph Lauren really design the cotton knit shirt known so affectionately as the Polo shirt or did the logo on the shirt create the buzz?
If such law existed would they have been a success?
Only time will tell who this bill really benefits.

Has been involved with fashion and managing a business for over five years and his store was voted best of Tahoe shops by http://www.bluelaketahoe.com

In a world extraordinarily focused on outward appearance, we need only to open a magazine or turn on our televisions to see the latest and greatest fashion trend; it walks the red carpet, checks out a movie premier, and heads out nightly to the hottest restaurants. And we, as a society always mindful of what’s popular, follows dutifully along, eager to purchase the “must have” item of the season. But, ultimately, the fashion style that works best for us is that which looks good on our particular body and reflects our very individual personality.

As anyone who follows the fashion industry will tell you, trends come and go. What is one year’s hot item is the next season’s fashion “don’t.” Designers present their newest lines and before you know it stores are carrying these clothes in every conceivable variation. And then, just as quickly, they’re gone. It’s almost impossible to keep pace. Luckily, the fashion style that makes the most sense on an individual level is the fashion style that reflects who we are as people; and that never goes out of style.

The most important thing to remember is that just because a particular fashion style is popular at the moment does not mean that it will look good on your particular body. Wearing something just for the sake of wearing it ultimately goes against the principles of fashion. A fashion style that you choose to wear should be something that accentuates your positives, downplays your negatives, and complements the overall line of your body.

Take the time to get to know your body and what styles work best with it. Assess your body objectively; if you have trouble spots, look for cuts and fabrics that camouflage what you need them to camouflage; if you are on the shorter side, look for a fashion style that elongates your body; and always choose colors that complement your skin tone.

Once you find a style that works – stick with it and add your personal touches to reflect your personality; that is the best fashion style you can possibly wear.

Plus size teen fashions are finally coming into their own! For years plus size teens were forced to shop at adult plus size clothing outlets with almost no choice in style, comfort or fit. Now, the internet has provided a place for plus size teens not only to shop for clothing and accessories, but to have actual choices in what they buy.

For years, plus size teens and young adults had little in the way of choice for fashionable, youthful clothing. They were forced to shop at “fat” stores, and find the least conservative styles at the “plus size ladies or guys” store. Manufacturers and retail stores would call all their plus size clothing, “teen friendly” when in reality the large flower print smock type blouses didn’t even really appeal to old ladies! It took years for the s/m/l designer mindset to realize that the majority of women and men, let alone teens aren’t s/m/l.

Plus size pre-teens had it even worse. At that awkward growing stage, pre-teens had to buy jeans that were way too baggy, long and shapeless and even with alteration, they would grow out of them quickly. Swimming suits for pre-teens went to size 14 or 16 if they were lucky, and they were never sized properly or attractive. JC Penneys and Sears were about the only common brick and mortar stores with some choice for plus size pre-teen and plus size teen fashion. And of course, back then in the 80s and early 90s there wasn’t an internet and catalog companies didn’t cater to plus size teens either! Going back further, the fashion world all but ignored plus size people in general. There might be one large size store in town and the mumu house dress and the boxy navy suit were all they carried. Plus size teenage girls in the 50s and 60s had to resort to wearing men’s jeans and slacks and shirts in order not to look like a 60 year old grandmother. The 70s brought an appreciation and realization that one size did not fit all, and jean companies began to stretch their line to size 18 and 20 with some fashionable choices. Richard Simmons came on the fashion scene in the early 80s and brought a recognition that plus size women and men were people too and might want some style in the wardrobe. But it still took another 20 years for fashion to embrace a teenage, youthful plus size look.

Thank goodness times have changed! Finally the fashion world has recognized there is a market for young, hip, plus size clothing and the internet is the delivery vehicle. The internet has forced choice on the fashion manufacturers and they are slowly realizing the demand is there and profitable. Forward thinking companies like Alight, Always for Me, Torrid, b&lu, Lane Bryant and The Avenue are delivering plus size teen fashions, in many choices and styles. Plus size teens still can’t find many options at the mall but that will no doubt change as the popularity of the online plus size teen stores becomes evident. Television shows like Oprah, Tyra and The View are featuring plus size fashion shows as the norm and not the exception. The waif model is morphing into a more realistic body type and fashion designers are building their styles on “normal” women, rather than designing a size 0 and making it larger for their plus size customers.

This notion that plus size teens would rather hide because of their weight problem and then not need fashion is being replaced with the realization that with body acceptance comes a greater ability to deal with weight issues. Again, stars like Oprah, Tyra and plus size model Emme have consistently asked for change in the way society treats plus size teens and adults. Slowly our image of a beautiful woman or attractive man isn’t limited to skin and bones, but includes all shapes and sizes. This new, healthy way of looking at size and style will ultimately help plus size teens feel better about themselves both mentally and physically. Hopefully the fashion world will embrace these new body types and retail possibilities and continue to expand their lines with plus size clothing actually made just for plus size teens.

Indian fashion has carved itself a niche in the fashion world. Fashion designers from India are becoming more and more popular both abroad and in their country. Indian fashion is flexible and adaptable, creating more room for experimentation. Ask any designer and he or she will tell you that nothing comes close to the thrill of witnessing his or her design achieve popularity and success.

Beauty pageants and other international shows that require contestants from all cultures have done well to promote Indian fashion. Fashion designers tailor their pieces according to the model, and a beautiful piece worn by a beautiful model will be good enough for publicity. Fashion worn for the whole world to see need not be gaudy and loud. Indian fashion designers have also been known to set trends when the world sees Indian clothing walk on runways, complete with accessories and headwear.

Fashion design is also gaining popularity as a course. In fact, it is one of the most coveted courses in colleges and universities. Students are given exposure to the world of fashion through inviting esteemed guests and internships in fashion design houses.

In terms of casual wear, motifs and block prints appearing on pants or shirts have been a hit with the youth of India. Formal functions call for gowns that have embellishments or embroidery. Ikkat or kashmiri prints can do wonders to add beauty to a chiffon or georgette gown.

Materials are as rich in quantity as tradition in India. The country exports large quantities of cotton for casual wear. With the rising popularity of Indian fashion, the myth that fashion design is not a lucrative career has been busted. Fashion has given students a way of expressing themselves and being known in the international arena.

Girls in their teens and in college are inundated with fashion from their friends and acquaintances. One can say they are immersed in fashion and have to be very fashion conscious to not appear out of touch and to decide what to wear every day.

Here is some advice to help those girls keep up to date with the latest fashion trends.

There are different styles that come out every year. Most designers release at least two collections per year, during fall and spring, while others release four collections – one for every new season. It is really tough being sharp on all those new things considering the different styles that are introduced with all those new collections. Besides, not all styles fit all people.

Even though you would love to wear a particular outfit that looked really good on the model on the runway, it might look pretty odd and out of place when you wear it. The first key to narrowing down your focus is to zoom in on those collections and styles that fit your particular height, weight, and personality type.

If you want to be on the safe side, select one of the classic styles. They rarely go out of fashion. However, girls don’t always like wearing classic clothes so, how can they always be in fashion? A simple way to make girls fashion work for you is to choose from a collection that suits you best. For example, if a particular color suits your skin tone best, you can wear a top of that color with jeans or black pants, which don’t have to be from the same collection.

Accessorizing is another clever way of keeping up with the latest girls fashion without even having to wear clothes from the latest trends. Work with your body’s strong and weak point, and select accessories that will enhance your best features. Nobody is perfect. You need to hide your flaws and enhance your good features, just like those seemingly perfect models that grace the catwalks of the fashion world.

A belt, scarf, hair clips or shoes can make all the difference in looking like an out of touch cave dweller and a hip fashion-conscious urban girl.

Make sure that you know what works for you and then find the fashion news sources that cover new collections and styles that suit you specifically. That way you can always be up to date with the latest girl fashion without suffering from information overload.

There are very few fashion designers that are known for their high quality clothing every time they produce something. Some amazing fashion designers are known by their name and when it is mentioned people know that they are guaranteed excellent clothing. Yves Saint Laurent is a fantastic fashion designer, a logo and a brand that people look at and admire. Not only is this amazing man one of the founders of French fashion but he also made high class dressing popular around the world.

Yves Saint Laurent was born in Algeria in 1936 and after his schooling moved to France to pursue his love for the fashion industry. He began his career at 17 as Christian Dior’s fashion assistant after only four years Dior died and Yves Saint Laurent was crowned head of the house of Dior. In 1953 he entered a young fashion designer contest and came third, he was invited to an award ceremony where he met the editor of Vogue.

The editor was very impressed with what he saw and advised him to pursue his love for fashion. He went on to open his own fashion house in 1962 and very quickly made a name for himself in the fashion world. Although Yves Saint Laurent led a very turbulent lifestyle and died very young there is no mistaking that his work and designs are some of the best in the world. The fashions that he created were amazing for the time and he popularized many trends such as very long boots, safari jackets and the most famous being the woman’s tuxedo.

Yves Saint Laurent pushed the boundaries of every day wear and encouraged women to wear what they like every day for every occasion. He encouraged black catwalk models and was the first fashion designer to have them in shows. All of his designs and clothes were designed with the modern women in mind and he pushed the limits to encourage women to want more from their clothes. In 1993 Yves Saint Laurent chose to sell his fashion house and it reached amazing figures of $600,000,000. Although he continued to design for a period his ill health and addiction problems made this very difficult.

The Yves Saint Laurent brand is currently owned by Gucci and designs fashion for men and women that reflects their true elegance and confidence. Their bags and shoes are sought after and it is very trendy to own a pair of these. The Yves Saint Laurent brand can be found online and you have many different ranges to choose from. You can also find the clothes in one of their 63 shops and boutiques alongside their flagship Paris shop. If you are looking for quality clothing then this brand will guarantee you that every time.

Although Yves Saint Laurent is most famous for his fashion he has also began to create cosmetics, perfumes and accessories. There is no excuse for you to leave the house without something of his on you. Everything he has ever designed has appealed to some section of people and the Yves Saint Laurent brand lives on even after his death.

Italy and Fashion have a very unique and special relationship, and when you consider such names as Dolce&Gabbana, Versace and Armani, to name but a few, it’s not difficult to see why. But if we look back into the history of Italian Fashion, (e.g. see also the article on Nina Ricci) we start to understand what gave Italy such a status in the Fashion World.

Count Giorgini started the ‘Italian Fashion’ craze in 1951, when he organised a fashion show to be presented to an International audience in Florence. He then continued to present other fashion shows at his palace, presenting new collections modelled by nobilty against a backdrop of fine arts and scenery. Nobilty would also model new collections at museums or exhibitions next to famous pieces of fine art. This all contributed to elevating the status of Italian fashion, and implanting in everyone’s minds that Italian fashion gives you status, is very rich in quality, and almost ‘fairytale’ like.

In the 1970s and 1980s Milan made its mark as being the Fashion Capital of Italy, and the phrase Made in Italy became universally recognised as meaning ‘high quality’, and ‘high fashion’. Today there are various fashion trade fairs in Milan, and it is considered by many to be the Fashion Capital of The World.

The application of art into the designing of clothing and lifestyle accessories are termed as fashion designing which have been created by the cultural and social influences during a particular period of time. It can also be expressed as another beautiful demonstration of life style statements. From the days of yore itself, like art, science, dance, music, fashion is the joyful and creative expression of human life. In reality, Mother Nature is the best fashion designer in the world, when we compare her vivid creations which are so beautiful, imaginative and considered to be glorious in their expressions all around.

Real and superficial; and the orient and the west, are the two major division in which the concept of fashion exists. In the superficial world of modelling and fashion, it is considered, that it is mostly co-related with upper class of the society. This is the wrong misconception which is express in its own way in todays fashion industry. Fashion clothes are generally purchased by the people who are blessed with money, power and glamour. The rest of the world will force others into believing that this constitutes fashion. This is a particular type of fashion which is offered with unique attributes which will not be able to access by most of the common people as it is displayed by the few select privileged classes only. This is in existence today in the superficial world of fashion.

Now we see the real world of fashion. It is a world of modelling which is bigger, richer and larger in size. In this real fashion world, people express their traditions and culture by means of clothing, accessories, also through various art forms such as music, dance which must be discovered by us. While expressing fashion outward into the world the characteristics of real fashion comes from the deep within the individual. There is no need for imitating anybody as it will comes naturally to you. It is outcome of a deep desire from the heart and soul which will be turned full to the brim and from deep within the mind and this feeling will be projected outwards.

Firstly you have to understand your inner self and its desire to connect with the external superficial world by means of joyous and colorful patterns of human expressions so that you can discover the real fashion in you. This is also a very feminine and soothing display of the human mind irrespective of the gender. Moreover it is obvious that styles and fashion will change from season to season and can also be termed as manifestation of the feminine principle itself, which is one of the natures.

In the world of fashion one of the fastest growing segments is Asian fashion. This is due to several reasons not the least of which is the timeless appeal of many the styles and fabrics that come from countries such as China, India, Korea, and Japan. While designs from Asia has always been a part of the fashion world, today we find it reaching a much broader market and becoming more entrenched in the everyday designs we see and wear. These large and burgeoning markets are home to some of the world’s favorite designers. They are also manufacturing centers for not just Asian fashion but clothing makers from around the world.

In the past most Asian fashion houses have focused on the local market. This meant higher prices both domestically and abroad. Now, however, many designers are taking advantage of advances in communication and distribution to expand their reach to the rest of the world. Prices have fallen and Asian fashion styles are becoming more and more popular throughout the world. Little known designers from places like Korea and Hong Kong are just beginning to look to exports for growth.

No matter where you are in the world you can already see the impact on the growth of the Asian fashion industry in your local stores. The Asian influence can be seen in clothing lines from high end women’s wear to everyday junior casual. Japanese styles such as the school girl look are popular for teens and the younger set while Indian influenced styles can be seen in trendy chic boutiques. In fact, the Indian look is now popular not just for its colorful fabrics and comfortable styling, but as part of the retro trend. Korean street fashion can be found wherever trendy or hip hop styles are sold.

When it comes to shopping for fashion, the hottest place to look is the Internet. Using your home computer you can literally shop the world. This opens up a world of possibilities to you. A quick Internet search will bring you to dozens of Asian fashion specialty retailers. From general sites that offer a wide range of choices to online shops that focus on Asian fashion from a particular country, chances are you may be a bit over whelmed by you choices. Once you have had a chance to browse you can zero in on the styles that suit you best.

Due to its importance as a manufacturing center, Asian offers particular appeal for bargain hunters. You’ll be able to find the hottest Asian fashion styles for pennies over what you will pay at a large department store. Most reputable dealers provide reasonable return policies and worldwide shipping is readily available.

If you like to dress on the cutting edge, turning to the latest fashions will allow you to do that affordably. So the next time you want to update your everyday wardrobe or shop for special occasion apparel, turn to the myriad of possibilities offered by Asian fashion. You’ll be turning heads and hearing “where in the world did you get that” each time you walk down the street.

No one trend is supreme in the fashion world at any one time. There are hundreds of competing looks that are epitomized by different fashion labels. Fashion design has evolved from the universal style worn by everyone.

Englishman Charles Fredrick Worth opened the first haute couture house in Paris in 1858, becoming the first famous fashion designer. Previously clothing design and creation was dictated by individuals who approached dressmakers ordering completed garments.

Continued advancements of communication and technology created an increase in the production of and desire for new textiles. The tradition of designers sketching out designs rather than the completed garment began as an economy.

As women became more independent they began to demand more practical clothing. In the early 1900s the Maison Redfern tailored suit became an indispensable part of the well dressed women’s wardrobe. Based directly on it’s male counterpart, it was both practical and elegant.

When Christian Dior launched his ‘New Look’ in 1947 it was possible for a fashion designer to radically transform the way a woman dressed. Tired of the broad shoulders and short skirts of war years fashion, women loved the feminine long full skirts and small shouldered nipped in tops that Dior created for them. He made them feel glamorous and as sophisticated as the movie stars on the silver screen.

Although most women could not afford a couture dress, the New Look fashion was made available to women as mass manufacturing took hold in America. This is when fashion for all became a reality and the trend has accelerated each decade.

Fashion has long been influenced by the world of art and current events. Over the years designers have taken inspiration from the Art Deco movement, Salvador Dali and ancient Greek civilisations to name but a few. Hemlines, adornments and cuts of fabric were reigned in during times of war or economic depression, giving raise to sleek, elegant, slim fitting outfits more suitable for the aspiring feminist.

The popularity of American movie stars like Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly and Lauren Bacall created a desire to copy their ‘Look’ and as they were seen by more people than the catwalk fashion shows, they became more influential. Celebrities have become the ideal showcase for designer fashion, with many fashion houses choosing a celebrity rather than a model to advertise their garments.

Followers of fashion have very different values and lifestyles and choose the style epitomised by a particular fashion label. As a result there will never be another ‘New Look’ that is taken up by everyone to some degree. The Romantics will follow John Galliano whilst the Rebels followed Alexander McQueen and so on. Every taste from Avant-Garde to Status Symbol is catered for, transforming fashion to big business and high art rather than small scale luxury.
